Do I need vaccination before trip?

  • People travel for different reasons, and in different degrees of style backpackers, businessmen, shoppers, missionaries, ministers of government, honeymooners Getting sick will ruin everybody trip. Forewarned is forearmed!

    Even if nothing is compulsory,you may still need vaccinations or advice for your trip.

    Developing countries are particularly disease prone, yet even travellers to industrialized countries like Europe, England and the USA may need something. For example, when were your last polio and tetanus boosters? You need them every ten years.

    Below is a guide only. No book can tell you exactly what you need because recommendations change frequently.

     

    All travellers

    Polio and Tetanus/Diphtheria vaccinations should be up to date. All travellers should be immune to Measles, Mumps and Rubella. Flu Vaccine and Pneumonia vaccine are recommended for all travellers over 65 years of age. HIB vaccine is recommended for travellers under 5 years of age.

     

    Many Travellers

    If you will be visiting a developing country you will need Hepatitis A vaccine, even visitors to 5 stars hotels should consider this one. You may also need Typhoid vaccination, especially if you plan to eat market or street stall food in these countries.

     

    Some Travellers

    Certain vaccines are recommended depending on what you will do whilst away. For example:

    Travellers anticipating contact with blood products e.g. health care workers should have Hepatitis B vaccine.

     

    Travellers who might have contact with animals, especially dogs may need rabies vaccine.

    Travellers going to work in developing countries may need a TB test. Children may need the TB vaccine.

    Certain vaccines are recommended depending on which country you will visit. For example:

    Travellers to Nepal need Meningitis Vaccine.

     

    Some Vaccines are only necessary for visitors to certain parts of a country. For example:

    Yellow Fever Vaccine is needed for the Amazon Basin regions of Brazil, but not for Rio.

     

    Special Cases

    Children, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions need specialised travel medicine advice regarding which vaccinations are recommended.
